Local Vendor Spotlight: Our House on Maple

Our House on MapleOur latest Local Vendor Spotlight is the vacation rental Our House on Maple. When I found “Our House” on social media, I fell in love with it and just knew I needed to do a feature on it!

I approached the owners Carmen and Ray Miller about doing an interview (& video). They were gracious enough to answer my questions and let me take a look around. Check out Carmen’s answers to the interview questions below.

Tells us a little about Our House on Maple.

[Carmen gave me so much wonderful information, I had to just pick a few of the many interesting facts she gave me! To read the story of how they bought the house, go here.]

  • The house was built in 1909.
  • The home builder, Charles W . Smith, was an architecture professor at the University.
  • There’s a 1909 Sears catalog in the entry way. It’s so fun to see what was available at that time and those prices!
  • There’s an old skeleton key in the entry on a red ribbon that I found in the yard. I figure it probably went to the front door long ago.
  • The tile in the kitchen was salvaged from an old Masonic Lodge in my hometown of Shidler, OK.
  • The old coffee grinder in the kitchen still works and is a fun addition!
  • The bunk room was the original master suite!
  • We added the deck not long after buying the house. The old cabinet out there was salvaged from the old florist shop in Cushing, OK. There are jars full of old glass and dishes found at Keystone Lake where the old town of Keystone was once located.
  • Two of the tress on the property are over 100 years old.

Do you have any favorite features about the house?

  • The gingerbread in the entry way was love at first sight. The pillars are awesome, too, and I loved the way there was a display pedestal built on each side.
  • The double mantel Tiger Oak fireplace with original cast iron insert, original mirror and original tile.
  • The builder’s initials and date are stamped in to the wood by the door in the guest room downstairs and the window casing next to the staircase.
  • The three triangle windows on the second story are awesome. Two are located in the attic, but we remodeled the master bath to showcase the one in there.
  • The original front door — though it has changed colors and glass, the door itself is still original.

How would one go about booking a bridal show or Bridesmaid Brunch?

How many guests does the house accommodate?

  • For overnight accommodations the house comfortably sleeps nine, with a maximum occupancy of 10.

For small events the house provides:

  • Indoor dining seating for eight. Total indoor seating for 20.
  • Outdoor dining seating for six. Total outdoor seating (back) for 12.

Local Vendor Spotlight: Denis the Jeweler

Denis the Jeweler Engagement Ring

Before I hop into the details of my visit, let me set the scene for you. I couldn’t have picked a better day to stop by Denis the Jeweler. It was a crisp, cool autumn day and the warm lights of the jewelry cases just beckoned you in. “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (the Marilyn Monroe classic) played on the TV in the background. Everything set the tone for a great experience!

 A Little About the Business

Dennis is a second generation jeweler — his father was also a jeweler. He is certified in gemology, watch repair, and jewelry fabrication. He also has two certifications from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), which is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, gem stones, and pearls. The shop used to be located on 7th and Main, but has relocated to 10th and Main. They’ve also recently expanded!

Products & Services

Among the services offered, there is watch repair, jewelry restoration, and jewelry appraisal. On a personal note, one of my favorite features is that they do repairs in-store rather than shipping them somewhere else.

At Denis the Jeweler, they are very detailed about letting people know exactly what they’re getting. They also try to ensure the ring will fit the lifestyle and profession of the recipient.

The full line of engagement rings are all models and prototypes. They have this amazing CAD software to where you can completely customize the ring. I got to see a run though, and was so impressed. It actually made me wish I’d discovered Denis the Jeweler before I got engaged!

Shop Denis the JewelerThree C’s — choose, change, and create. Choose the display ring that most suits your taste, make desired changes via the CAD software to create a ring that fits your personal style.

You can also bring in an heirloom piece and have it reset.

Tips for the Bride and Groom

There’s a lot of stuff out there on the internet, but you don’t get any personal service. You want to trust who you are working with. Plus there’s the issue of service, who is going to take care of it? The benefit of Denis the Jeweler is that they do repairs in-house. You get personalized service and your ring stays right here!

To check out Denis the Jeweler for yourself head over to 10th & Main in downtown Stillwater.       Website:                                                                                                                            Facebook:

Local Vendor Spotlight: SMALLCAKES

Smallcakes SpotlightIt’s time to share an interview with another local vendor. This time we’ll here from the owners of Smallcakes: A Cupcakery in Stillwater.

Tell us a little about your bakery. How did you get started?

Smallcakes has been around since 2008 and originated in Overland Park, KS. Our CEO is Jeff Martin and he was featured on Cupcakes Wars on the Food Network. Our Smallcakes location has been here in Stillwater since July 2014.

The current owners, Nicholas Keen and Kaylie Wilson, purchased the Stillwater franchise in August of 2015.

What is your favorite part about making treats for special occasions?

We love making people’s days with cupcakes. Our slogan is “Maybe a Cupcake Will Help?” We strive to serve the highest quality of cupcakes for anything from weddings and birthday parties to a small treat after a meal.

What is your most popular cupcake flavor?

We serve 12 daily flavors and rotate through over 200 specials at our store. We typically feature between 3 and 6 specials a day. I would say our most popular special would be our wedding cake cupcakes. We have them every Saturday and our customers always hurry in to get them before they are gone.

Who could resist wedding cake? No wonder it’s such a popular flavor! As a bonus, we asked the owner’s what their personal favorites were. They said it was a hard question, but Kaylie favors the Rainbow Sherbet cupcake while Nick prefers the Chubby Honey.
